The Data Center of the Future
Technology is changing at an ever faster pace. Unlike in the past when technology could be deployed for technology sake, it is now imperative to deploy technology based on business drivers and needs. As a result, companies that are able to closely align business and technology will have a competitive advantage in the market. The ones that succeed will make the data center transformation required to provide business services.
With virtualization technologies becoming mainstream and adoption rates rising, traditional data centers have transformed into virtual data centers, where technologies are virtualized to provide business services. Although this trend will continue for a few more years, leading-edge companies are positioning themselves for the data center of the future.
The data center of the future no longer focuses on technology only, but instead it concentrates on the services that need to be provided to the clients. In effect, the data center transforms into a services data center. The author describes the transformation from traditional, via virtual, to the services data center, with special emphasis on the business impact of this transformation. The inherent technology and the associated impact on communications service providers (CSPs) are also covered.
The data center of the future consists of a service-driven organization in full support of the business environment. As such, the infrastructure consists of reusable hardware and software components that are provisioned and assembled in real time, based on business needs. For the duration of this business need, the information technology (IT) components remain intact, and when additional business needs arise, more IT resources are contracted. At the end, these resources are de-allocated and returned to the IT resource pool for future use.
From a technology perspective, the key drivers for IT change include mobility and convergence. Mobility enables the work force to access corporate information at the right time, in the right format and at the right place to enable the right decision-making. Convergence, on the other hand, is an enabler for this type of interaction with the enterprise, while at the same time slowing down this process, as technologies need to be integrated to provide the end-to-end capabilities.
